John Neumeier’s thrilling rendition of Strauss’s erotically charged, biblical ballet The Legend of Joseph was one of the most-attended ballet productions of the 1970s. Filmed in 1977 at the Vienna State Opera, this performance features sets by Ernst Fuchs and conducting by Heinrich Hollreiser. Neumeier relied on the Old-Testament story of Joseph (Kevin Haigen) and Potiphar’s wife (Judith Jamison) and created contemporary choreography rife with philosophical and psychological elements.
